Great Ape Protection Act Reintroduced

The Great Ape Protection Act (GAPA) was reintroduced today in Congress. Project R&R: Release and Restitution for Chimpanzees in U.S. Laboratories applauds the bill's lead sponsors: Reps. Adolphus Towns, D-NY, David Reichert, R-WA, Jim Langevin, D-RI, and Roscoe Bartlett, R-MD and a long list of other cosponsors, for their commitment and continued attention to the urgent need for this legislation.

Project R&R is asking all members to contact their representatives immediately and ask them to cosponsor the bill.

Last night, an ABC Nightline segment featured a nine-month undercover investigation of New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) in Louisiana by HSUS that captured footage of the psychological and physical suffering of chimpanzees at NIRC. The tragic realities of life for chimpanzees and other primates in U.S. laboratories have finally been brought to light. Last evening’s expose on ABC NIGHTLINE educated millions of viewers on their plight. NIH* and the labs must be held accountable. Today, the Great Ape Protection Act (GAPA) was reintroduced in the 111th Congress. Project R&R has been working diligently with HSUS, other organizations and individuals to secure a precedent setting number of cosponsors and a groundswell of public support for this bill. GAPA offers the promise of release and restitution to all chimpanzees now languishing in all U.S. laboratories.

More than 7,000 Monkeys, Pigs, and Goats being Tortured

As you read this, animals are being shot, burned, exposed to toxic chemicals, or are having their limbs amputated in an attempt to train soldiers to treat injuries resulting from trauma and chemical exposure. PCRM recently discovered that the Department of Defense (DoD) is training military medical personnel with monkeys, pigs, and goats. The animals are subjected to unnecessary pain and fear, even though better methods are available.

Please stand together with us and pledge your support for PCRM to challenge the DoD to provide the best medical training on behalf of our soldiers and take a stand against cruelty to animals.

The problems with current practices are many:

* This training causes pain and suffering to animals.
* Animals’ skin and internal organs are different from humans’ in many ways. Injured animals do not accurately mimic a human’s wounds or reactions.
* The DoD’s continued use of animals in these programs constitutes a violation of its own animal welfare regulation.

As a WFLF supporter, I hope you will stand together with us in support of PCRM in this fight for animals. If you agree, please sign the PCRM pledge of support today.

The use of human simulators, civilian trauma centers, and other methods all do a much better job at training medical personnel. What you’ll be astounded by is that other parts of the military are already using non-animal trauma training effectively.

Read more about this issue by clicking here. But be forewarned. Some of what you’ll read is graphic. If you get upset easily when you hear about the harm inflicted on these poor animals, then take our word that this is something we must work hard to change.

We hope hear more from PCRM in the coming weeks about their campaign to work with the DoD to use better methods to treat soldiers’ casualties without harming a single animal. PCRM will meet in person with the DoD representatives this January, so sign the pledge of support so PCRM can show how many people stand together on this!

Dec Deadline to Help Stop Cruelty to Animals in Labs

GM stockholders can help support the shareholder resolution not to fund charities that engage in cruel animal experiments-

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is working on a campaign to require prominent companies to implement meaningful written policies designed to maximize donations to charities that promote human health, while avoiding unnecessary cruelty to animals. Many companies spend enormous sums to fund charities that engage in cruel and unscientific animal experiments. PCRM wants to end this wasteful spending.

PCRM is in the process of filing several shareholder resolutions, which request the adoption and enforcement of the above policies. However, they are in need of additional persons owning GM stock to support that shareholder proposal. The stock must be worth at least $2,000 and have been held at least since December 2007. The stock can be held in your own name, or by your broker, but it cannot be owned through a mutual fund. The December filing deadline will soon be approaching, so they need to hear from you as soon as possible.

Animal Experimentation: Vivisection

Day after day monkeys, dogs, cats, rabbits and numerous other species are kept captive and subject to on going cruel experimentation under the guise of humane testing. These animals come from a variety of backgrounds; many of them while still nursing have been stolen away from their mother's who were oftentimes killed in the process of their capture; dogs and cats taken from animal shelters and brought to labs, also known as pound seizure; other animals come from the entertainment industry after years of abuse performing in Circuses, etc. and many of these animals were born in the lab and will never know life without torture. Regardless of their background each of these animals suffer a lifetime physical and emotional agony with no hope for escape. Animal experimentation, also known as Vivisection is a global issue.
